Research Associate / Fellow (Fixed term)

Reference: MED088122X1
Closing Date: Sunday, 5th June 2022
Job Type: Research
Department: Life Sciences
Salary: £27924 to £40927 per annum, (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £31406 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

This post is funded by UKRI MRC Advanced Pain Discovery Platform and will be embedded in the Pain Centre Versus Arthritis, specifically in the laboratories of Dr. Dajas-Bailador and Prof. Victoria Chapman. The research aims of this post are to investigate the capacity of novel antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to target specific candidate pain genes and regulate the development, excitability and sensitization of peripheral neuron sensory axon terminals. Molecular targets to be investigated in experimental models of pain have been selected from ongoing clinical studies in patients with osteoarthritis.  The Research Associate/Fellow will model pain processing in vitro using cultures of mouse primary sensory neurons grown in compartmentalised microfluidic chambers to study local peripheral axonal sensory mechanisms through the monitoring of calcium transients in the cell body.

This post is embedded in the wider project investigating the role of peripheral inflammatory signalling in osteoarthritis and joint pain led by Dr Jones (Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, University of Birmingham), plus colleagues at the University of Bath (Prof Mark Lindsay), the HDR Alleviate Pain Data Hub (Dundee), the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (Prof Edward Davis) and Eli Lilly Global Pain Discovery.

The Research Associate/Fellow will come into a dynamic team of pain and axonal biology researchers within the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham. They will work within a highly active and exciting academic environment that exploits multidisciplinary approaches across axon biology, RNA technologies and in vivo pain models. The Research Associate will be mentored and supervised by Dr. Dajas-Bailador and Prof. Victoria Chapman.

This is a full-time post (36.25 hours), fixed term to 30th April 2025.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Victoria Chapman (Victoria.chapman@nottingahm.ac.uk) and/or Federico Dajas-Bailador (f.dajas-bailador@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
